"Martin and his wife Fredricka Fichtner, sang in the choir of SaintPaul's German Evangelical church at the corner of High and Mound; andMartin belong to other musical organizations... When Martin junior diedthe German language newspaper "Westbote" in obituary printed August 12,1869, bestowed on him its usual appellation for German immigrants whohad made good. In September of the previous year Martin had had themisfortune to fall out a window; the impact shuttered his whole nervoussystem. He suffered a long time and during the last week it is lifelost his hearing. The newspaper lauds Martin: through his skill as acraftsman and his prudence as a man of business he gained riches andthrough his upright conduct won universal esteem among both Germans andAmericans.
