Martha Jane Richey was born in Jefferson, Alabama the daughter of John Richey and Martha M __(?). Her father purchased land in Alabama on 14 April 1821 when the family moved to Jefferson, Alabama to seek land. When they sold the land in Alabama, she moved on with them to Texas to Red River County and where her father filed for a headright in Red River county.

She met Sanford Fults who was one of the early settlers in the Stouts Creek neighborhood. Most family historians believe they were married about 1841. When Sanford Fults applied for his headright certificate on 4 October 1838, he received 640 acres as a class 2 certificate, receiving his patent on 2 August 1841s2(640 acres indicates they had married). Her husband was a trustee of the Mt. Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church of Christ near Pine Forest in May 1855. She died before 1880 as her husband is a widower on the 1880 Texas Census in Franklin County (East of Hopkins County). They had twelve children according to the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census.
