Advisory

Some researchers believe that Martha, wife of Robert Richie is the daughter of Robert Scott, whose daughter Martha Scott was baptized 10 March 1748 in Tinkling Spring, Augusta County, Virginia by Rev. John Craig, but this Martha appears to be several years too old to have been the wife of Robert Richie.

Martha, wife of Robert Richie, is listed as a 60-70 yr old on the 1830 Butler County, OH Census and as a 70-80 year old on the 1840 Montgomery County, IN census, making her birth fall between 1760 and 1770, clearly much younger than Martha, the daughter of Robert Scott, baptized on 10 March 1748.

In addition, the following circumstantial evidence appears to support Martha as the daughter of John Nickell, Jr.:

1. Martha is named in her father, John Nickell's will in Augusta County:

Page 109.--John Nickle's will. dated, 17th June, 1805--Wife, Sarah; son, John; granddaughter, Peggy Hall; daughter, Martha Richey; four daughters, Martha Richey, Polly Cravens, Betty Blair, Nancy Nickle; son, John, and son-in-law, Joseph Blair, executors. Proved, 20th April, 1810.

2. Robert Richey was the assignee of Thomas Nickell for the 320 acres where the Richey family lived on Indian Creek in Greenbrier County, (W)Va. Martha had an uncle named Thomas who was about the same age as Robert Richey, and a Thomas Nickell appears on the Greenbrier County tax lists with other Nickells families in the 1780's and 1790's).

3. Current research by the Nickell family indicates that Martha Nickell was born in the right age range (b. abt 1763) to be the oldest woman (Martha, the widow of Robert Richey) listed with the Samuel and Joseph Gray families on the 1830 (60-70 yrs)and 1840 (70-80 yrs) Federal Censuses. Robert' Rev. War Pension file indicates that Martha was living with Samuel and Martha Gray.

4.The naming pattern of Robert's and Martha's first 3 children matches that of the possible grandparents, John and Sarah Nickell and Thomas Richey (Thomas' wife unknown).
