On this 1st day of December 1819, before me, the subscriber, one of the Judges of the Court of common pleas for the said district, personally appeared Robert Richey aged 69 years, resident in Butler County in the said district who being by me 1st duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress, entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War:" That he, the said Robert Richey enlisted for the term of 2 years on the 10th day of August in the year 1776 in Stanton in the State of Virginia in the company commanded by Captain Gammel [perhaps Robert Gamble?] & 12 Regiment in the brigade commanded by ColonelWood [James Wood] in the line of the State of Virginia on the Continental Establishment; that he continued to serve in said Corps, or in the service of the United States, until the year 1778 when he was discharged from service in White Plains State of __ that he was in the battles of Brandywine [September 11, 1777], German Town [Germantown, October 4, 1777], Monmouth [June 28, 1778] & others and that he is in reduced circumstances, and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support; and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services.

This may certify that Sargeant Robert Richey (who is now discharged, having compleated the term of his enlistment) has ever since he entered the Service supported the character of a brave and valuable Soldier, – At the Battle of Brandywine, on the 11th September 1777, I was witness to his conduct, and think it is a duty incumbent on me the say he merited great honor.

[There is correspondence in the file that indicates that the veteran was dropped from the rolls because he never filed the schedule required under the 1820 act; that he died sometime prior to the passage of the 1832 act; that he was survived by a widow named Martha who died sometime in 1844 or 1845 survived by children not named in the file.]
[Veteran was pensioned at the rate of $8 per month commencing December 1, 1819, for service as a Sergeant for 2 years in the Virginia Continental line.]
