Listed in the 1870 Milam County, Texas Census as Martha Bunch, age 20, born TN. She is listed in the McChance household, along with her brother. Perhaps she was widowed after she became pregnant, and was pregnant during the 1870 census with Maddie (later listed in 1880 as M.R. Stewart)...Nearby is a Mary Jenkins, age 17, born TX. In the 1860 Milam County, TX Census, Mary Jenkins is living with the same Chance family.

Listed in the 1900 Montgomery County, Texas census living with son Will and his wife Texana, and son Robert. Born 1857 in Texas, age 43 years, widowed and has 7 children, with 5 still living. Both parents born in Tennessee.

In both the 1900 and 1910 census', Will and Robert have their mother listed as born in Texas.

Listed in the 1920 Montgomery County, Texas Census, Precinct 2, District 7, Enumerated Feb. 12 (I think), Dwelling 241, Household 242. Martha Stewart, age 66, widowed, born TN, parents born TN. Living next door to Will and family.

Applied for James' pension twice, once in 1918, when she was denied, and again in 1925. According to the ages at the time she applied, her birth year would have been between 1849 and 1851. She states she was born in Nashville, TN, and on the 2nd application, she states she has lived in Texas for 71 years (which would have meant since 1854). She lived in Waukegan, Texas in 1918, and states she has lived there for 23 years. Her 2nd application was filed in Milano, Texas, Milam County. She was approved for pension on February 6, 1925.

Maiden name is listed as Rice on James Robert's death certificate. Will Finley's and Allie's death certificates show her maiden name as Jenkins.

Will's granddaughter has heard that Martha's maiden name was Jenkins, and she married a Bush before marrying James. Martha and the Unknown Bush were said to have had a daughter, Maddie, who married a Hall. Mr. Bush was a school teacher.
