Marie Kokrine was born at the site of her father's trading post on the Yukon River. Her father was known as Gregory Kokrine, and she said that her mother was Tatiana Larion.
Marie attended the Holy Cross Catholic mission school on the Yukon River, then attended school in San Francisco.
When her parents died, she moved back to Alaska and lived with her half sister, Sophie and Sophie's husband Gordon Bettles in Gordon's trading post at Bettles on the Koyukuk River. Undoubtedly this is when she met Frank Whalley since he carried the freight between Bettles and Wiseman.

Marie later moved to the new town of Fairbanks along with Gordon and Sophie Bettles. She worked as a domestic in Fairbanks until she married Frank Whalley in 1908 in Tanana. She was married by Jules Jette.

After Frank's death in 1953, Marie moved to Petaluma where one of Frank's sisters lived with her husband. Marie died in Petaluma in 1976.
