His name is styled as Gregory Kokrine in many US documents and the present-day family has adopted the surname spelling 'Kokrine'. His daughter, Marie (Kokrine) Whalley, said his name was Henry Gregory Kokrine. The original Finnish spelling of his surname is unknown and numerous opinions have been offered about it.

It is likely that all persons with the surname KOKRINE are descendants of this man.

Trading Post

After the US purchase of Alaska in 1867 Gregory Kokrine was one of a hand full of traders who started posts along the Yukon River. He is shown in the 1882 iconic photo of Yukon traders.
His trading post was located on the north shore of the Yukon just upstream of the Nowi River, but it later moved about 15 miles downstream.
Gregory is mentioned in several accounts of early travel on the Yukon, e.g., "Kokrine had just finished distilling a batch of Hootch, and he was having a glorious time. He had three of the old fashioned cylinder music boxes wound up, and all of them playing a different tune at the same time. He was giving onlookers a sample of Russian dances, besides liberally dispensing the hootch."S1

Death

A family member had the Library of Congress translate records from the Register of the Russian Orthodox Church at St. Michaels, AK. Death of Grigorii Kokranin. St. Michael's Register, 1899, page 129, entry 6 Date of death June 1898 Date of burial June 5 Calling and name of deceased: The Finn Grigorii Kokranin Age 76 Cause of death, Heart attack due to age

These are probably Julian dates. The Gregorian dates (before 28Feb1900) can be found by adding 12 days.

In 1998 Effie Kokrine, wife of Gregory Kokrine's grandson Andrew, said that Gregory Kokrine died in a steam bath in Dawson, not at Kokrines.
