The Three Complicated Marriages of Margaret Patton

Margaret Patton, sister of William Patton was married three times; first to Thomas Fulton; second to James Woods; and third to John Cawley. Both Thomas Fulton and John Cawley are are named in her will. Some researchers have inadvertently also placed Joseph Gamble also as a husband, but this is in error (notice in Margaret's will that she does NOT name Joseph Gamble as her husband and names William Gamble as her grandson). The Joseph Gamble named in her will married her daughter Margaret Fulton, and thus was Margaret Patton's son-in-law. This was error was due to the following Chalkley's record that mistakenly named the elder Margaret as Joseph Gamble's wife:

  • Page 220.--19th March, 1774. Mathews to John Cawley. John Cawley now husband of the late Margaret Gamwell, who was wife of Joseph Gamwell. (Not true, Margaret Patton was the MOTHER of Margaret Fulton who married Joseph Gamble. Margaret Fulton (the daughter) had died prior to 1768, when Joseph Gamble re-married another of Margaret Patton's daughters, Isabelle Fulton).
