MARGARET FOLEY COURTNEY BURKE (1849-1925)

Of her relatives, I only know of two sisters: Mrs. Catherine McGorrick and Mrs. Elizabeth O'Connell.

In 1912, Grandmother Margaret spent six months in Long Beach, California with my Aunt and my family. While there, Grandmother (whose hands were never idle) decided to make some portieres for their home in LeMars. They were made from eucalyptus buds and beads strung with heavy twine. This handiwork resulted in an inflammation of the skin know as etysipelas. She was very ill.

She loved Irish tunes, particularly 'My Wild Irish Rose'. When friends would be visiting about the weather (and particularly friends from Iowa), Grandmother would listen and when her turn came she would usually say 'It was so cold in LeMars that it you threw a bucket of water in the air it would come down a solid block of ice".

Grandma was a warm, lovable, religious human being and also fun.

P.S. Am certain that Uncle Den had a grocery store.
