I know her as Granny Wright. Per Betty, Granny grew up on Backus Mountain in the vicinity of Red Springs. We think we found the family farm once. Granny's mother apparently wanted to name her Mary Ann, likely after her grandmother, but according to Betty, Granny's father wanted to call her Mamie, and so it was. Granny's mother, Lillie (Ann?) Frances McClanahan died when Granny was just a young girl. Father John Adam Goddard remarried a woman named Kate Carter, and the story is that Granny never took to her. One photograph indicates that Granny was much older than her half-siblings, and presumably she helped raise them.

At some point, Granny learned midwifery and was noted for this occupation after she and her husband James Wright moved to Grandview. They raised 6 children, had a farm. Betty lived with them even after marrying. Following the death of James in 1953, Granny moved with Betty, Donald and their children to Maxwell Hill. They sold the Grandview house within a few years.
