M. Louis Leis was born February 5, 1817 in Germany. He married Charlotte Meir in 1844. She was born in Germany June 24, 1820. they came to America two years after their marriage, with one daughter, Charlotte. they settled in a log house in the woods north of Greenville which was known as the old Leis Farm. (Now owned by Gilbert A. Lease) M. Louis Leis was a mason and worked at his trade in Greenville, while the wife worked hard rearing a family and doing the farm work. He helped to build the city hall in Greenville by carrying brick in a hod all day for twenty-five cents. He also helped to build the first red brick school house known today as the Studabaker school, south of Greenville. He helped to organize and build the Lutheran Church of Wakefield which both were faithful members for nearly 50 years. they had twelve children; namely, Charlotte, Henry I., Louis, Julia, Caroline, Minnie, Charles, Elizabeth, John, Sara, Henry ll, and August. The eldest daughter, Charlotte, came home to live with her parents because she could not endure the abuses of her husband. On the evening of January 8, 1891 Christ Oelschlager (Charlote's husband) appeared to compel his wife to sign a deed to sell their farm, and when she refused he struck her and began to abuse her aged parents. She gave up her life trying to protect her invalid daughter. She died January 8, 1891, and was buried at Wakefield near Greenville January 11, 1891, at the age of seventy years and six months. M. Louis Leis died February 11, 1893 and was buried at Wakefield at the age of seventy-six years.
