Physical Description? |
|
Tall and thin, had injured leg for many years |
Geneive told a story of how during the Depression, after he drove truck for Piggly-Wiggly, he was unemployed for awhile. Then he got a job at the coal mine in Hegler, but the first day on the job, the mine went out on strike.
Geneive also told that during the cold months during the Depression. Hank and other men would go out at night along the railroad tracks and as the coal trains went north to Chicago they threw rocks on the mounded coal in the coal cars to knock it off. They would come back in daylight to get the coal to heat their homes.
After the accident to his leg, he could not get a job because back then, people did not hire folks with disabilities. A former Edgar Co. Democratic Party Chairman, told about taking Hank to Springfield, Illinois to try and get him a state job. It was very frustrating, because Hank was going up and down steps, walking circles around the well folks on his crutches, but they would not hire him because he was crippled.
A former Edgar Co. Democratic Party Chairman, told that he appreciated Hank's loyalty and support to the party. He remembered that right after the family moved to Edgar County, Hank registered to vote in both Vermilion and Edgar Counties and voted in both during at least one election.

Hank was driving a car somewhere near Ridge Farm, Illinois on Route 1 and the tie rod broke, so he had no control over the steering. There was an accident, a crash. He broke a leg. Geneive said he was taken to Lakeview Hospital in Danville, Illinois. She went to visit him and the room was empty and he was gone. She thought he had died and no one had told her. Hospital people said he insisted on being transfered to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Danville, because he wouldn't have to pay there. During that move, a piece of muscle got caught in the fracture and it wouldn't heal properly. He had a metal rod in his leg which would always poke him in the hip leaving a permanent bruise. He always used crutches from this point on.
- ↑ Renee or Gary Henry. Personal Knowledge.
He went to school in Louisville, Kentucky to learn the Linotype trade.
