Howard and Jean Merrill (www.merrill.org/genealogy/tmn& E-Mail hjmerril@@eatel.net) E-mailed following information on 11/05/02:

We found in the 1850 census, Stockholm, St. Lawrence, NY what we are pretty sure is your Mary J., age 5, with her parents, Lyman C(linton) Merrill, 47, and Dianna (Place), 35, and (MJ) siblings, Joseph, 17; Laura A., 14; James, 12; Harriet, 10; Martha, 8; and Hiram, 2. Lyman was listed in Stockholm in 1840, but was in Potsdam in 1860, and was in Broadwell, Logan (County), Illinois in 1870.

We do not know for sure who Lyman C's father was but believe him to be the Joseph, over 45, who was listed in Stockholm in 1820 (with six sons, including a Chauncy). By 1830, Joseph has apparently d. and his widow is living with Lansing and 3 brothers. Chauncy is next door. There is also in Stockholm a Harvey and a Silvanus, but we don't know which, if either, belongs to the family. We don't know Joseph's lineage, or even where he came from. Sorry we couldn't help more.
