!"Luis Maria Alfaro, who we knew as a revered elderly gentleman, and of whom it could be said, in short, was a man of pure white soul. He was friendly to other people, was scrupulous in meeting his obligations, or duties, and yet extremely simple. He was born in Utuado in 1845, and came to Barros when his father, Don Mariano Alfaro, was named Mayor in 1849. The unfortunate loss of his father forced him to work as a young boy, to meet his needs, as well as the needs of his mother, for they were left very poor. Thus, he started his life's struggle, helping Father Jose Rafael Rodriguez in church, and later as a scribe/ secretary at the town hall. Now at a ripe age, God put in his path, to be his lifelong companion, that virtuous lady that responded to the name of Dona Reparada Diaz, daughter of our town, and a direct descendant of Don Francisco De Sales Diaz, one of the town founders. Don Luis was a tireless guardian of public safety, always alert to what may cause a tragedy, for example, what may cause a fire, etc., and in hurricane season, when there was a threat, how many times, at late hours of the night we found him watching the danger that may occur, the swelling of the river, and watching the changes in barometric pressure. He worked as a scribe and secretary of the township for more than fifty years; until six months before his death, which occurred on 2 June, 1920, when his children, after continually trying, where, at last, to convince him that he should rest."

!The above quote came from a book entitled "Cronicas de Barros" by Pedro Arroyo Vivas, a historian of the town of Barros. See page 189.
