In early manhood LEONARD taught school, and was later apprenticed to a carpenter and joiner.

In 1861 LEONARD moved from Tuscarawas County to Wayne County, Ohio. Next, he moved to Marshall County, Iowa. After that, he moved to Kidder County, North Dakota. Leonard was an ardent advocate of the temperance cause, and as a young man joined the Methodist Church, where he was a devoted member.
