Facts and Events
[edit] Joseph the wheelwrightJoseph Spalding the wheelwright (of Joseph2, Edward1) should not be confused with Joseph the husbandman (of John2, Edward1). Though they had different fathers, these two men were called brothers because their wives were probably sisters. The wife of the former was Mary who may have been daughter of John Colburn by his first wife Susanna Read, and wife of the latter was Elizabeth, daughter of John and Elizabeth Colburn. The children of the wheelwright were clearly identified by a petition from the selectmen of Dunstable stating he was living in that town, "upwards of seventy-six years old," infirm and poor, and asking the Court to compel his well-to-do children to support him. It named them as: Joseph Spaulding (eldest son) and John Spaulding of Dunstable, Ebenezer Spaulding of Westford, Susanna, wife of Mousel Wright of Woburn, Mary, wife of John Nutting of Groton, and Lydia, wife of Ephraim Nutting of Groton whith whom Joseph chose to live.
