When Was Joseph Born?

The Loomis genealogy includes the several Loomis men in the 2nd and 3rd generations bearing the name Joseph. Note that #68 and #117 have the same birth date.

1. Joseph – b. c1615; d. 26 Jun 1687
   10. Joseph – b. 15 Jul 1549; d. 26 Feb 1715
       67. Joseph – b. 28 Nov 1682; d. 19 Mar 1682/3
       68. Joseph – b. 8 Oct 1684
5. Deacon John – b. 1622; d. 2 Sep 1688
   22. Deacon Joseph – b. 7 Nov 1651; d. 1699
       116. Joseph – b. 13 Feb 1681; d. young
       117. Joseph – b. 28 Nov 1682; d. 30 May 1748

Windsor records give only three boys named Joseph Loomis born in the early 1680s. The father and grandfather are clearly identified for the ones born in 1681 and 1684.

    13 Feb 1681 - Joseph s/o Joseph (s/o John)
    28 Nov 1682 - Joseph s/o Joseph
    8 Oct 1684	- Joseph s/o Joseph (s/o Joseph Sr)

We also find a death on 19 Mar 1682/3 for Joseph “s. Joseph (s. Joseph)” who must be Joseph (#67). It would make sense for #10 to name another son Joseph (#68) in 1684 after the death of the first Joseph (#67) at about age 6 months.

The inventory of Joseph (#22) in 1699 named his children including son Joseph age 18. That age further supports the Joseph born in 1681 as son of Joseph (#22). There is neither a birth nor death record to indicate the existence of another Joseph. Consequently, it appears that #116 and #117 in the Loomis genealogy are one and the same: the Joseph Loomis who was born 13 Feb 1681, married Mary COOLEY, and died 30 May 1748.
