    Joseph Sterling Howard
    Birth: 25 Aug 1823 in watertown, n.y.
Death: 11 Feb 1890 in moscow, idaho

It is not clear why the birth place is given as Watertown, when census records imply that his parents lived in Ellisburg from the time of their marriage until their deaths. However, it is possible that the family moved around a bit between censuses, or that the child was born away from home for some reason.

The birth year does not match the age Joseph gave in later years, but it fits in the family better than 1822. It is possible that he misrepresented his age for reasons unknown (possibly to appear older than his wife).
