White, DICTIONNAIRE GENEALOGIQUE DES FAMILLES ACADIENNES; 1636-1714; Moncton, New Brunswick, Centre d'Etudes Acadiennes, 1999, 2 vols.; p. 747; own copy. #(9): Joseph (dit BELLEFONTAINE dit BEAUSÉJOUR), son of Gabriel & Andrée-Angélique JEANNE (JASNE), born around 1695, was on the 1698 census at Riv St-Jean, age 3 years; on 1761 Cherbourg census; on 1767, age 71 years; on 1772, age 77 years. He married around 1726 at Riv St-Jean to Marie-Anne BERGERON dit d'AMBOISE, daughter of Barthélemy & Genevieve SERREAU de SAINT-AUBIN. He died (1777 census of Cherbourg) 23 Dec 1776.

Joseph BELLEFONTAINE dit BEAUSÉJOUR, born 1695, son of Gabriel & Andree-Angelique JOANNES. He married around 1725 to Marie-Anne BERGERON, daughter of Barthelemy & Genevieve SERREAU of Port Royal; ten children. He lived at River Saint-Jean, where he was major of the military of the region under the orders of the governor of "la Galissonniere," from 10 Apr 1749. His widow was in Louisiana [sic] on the census of 1769, along with several of their children, who settled there.

    Entry on p. 2494 (Louisiana) says that he died before 1769, when his widow occupied lot # 14 on the west band of the Mississippi, at Saint James, Louisiana. [Not this man.]

NAME-MARRIAGE-RESIDENCES-DEATH: "BERGERON d'AMBOISE." Joseph Alexander GODIN dit BELLEFONTAINE was a prisoner at Halifax in 1763; when freed, he relocated in LA. He died at Attakapas Poste on 6 Sep 1765 (according to LES VOYAGEURS, vol. V, no. 4 (Dec 1984); p. 151. However, correction in vol. VI, no. 2 (Jun 1985); p. 90, says Joseph Alexander GODIN dit BELLEFONTAINE dit BEAUSEJOUR died on 2 Sep 1765 (reference: Hebert, SM Ch, v. 1, p. 12) [ not the same man].

Joseph dit BELLEFONTAINE, born in Beaubassin in 1692, son of Gabriel GODIN dit BELLEFONTAINE & Marie Angelique JASNE. He married in 1725 to Marie-Anne BERGERON, daughter of Bartholemy & Genevieve SERREAU; five children. On 10 Apr 1749, by order of M. de la GALISSONNIERE, he was appointed Major in charge of militia of River St. John, where he possessed several leagues ofland. Joseph was captured by the English in 1759 and watched one of his daughters and three grandchildren massacred before his eyes. He and son Michel were sent into exile in England; after release he went to Cherbourg, France, where he was given a Citation (see supplement) and granted a pension of 300 livres as compensation. His other three sons eluded capture and went to Louisiana.

Seigneur Joseph BELLEFONTAINE dit BEAUSEJOUR of the Riviere St. Jean, son of Gabriel, an officer aboard the king's vessels in Acadie & Angelique-Roberte JEANNA, was a major of all the Militia at Riviere St. Jean, by order of Mr. de la GALLISSINNIERE from 10 Apr 1749 until his capture by the enemy. He owns many lieus of land. He saw the massacre of one of his daughters and her three children by the English. He was living in Cherbourg, France in 1767 at the time of this memoir, and was aged 71 years. [Living there also was his son Michel, son-in-law Eustace PARE (PART), and his 2nd wife.]
