Joseph Conklin, son of David and Freelove (Martin) Conkling, was born on 12 June 1818 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The 1842 Cincinnati City Directory shows that he worked as a carpenter and lived at the corner of Western Row and Mason. This was probably the house and lot on Western Row which his father left to him in his will of that year. The city directory also shows that his brother, William H. Conklin, a bricklayer lived (“boards”) with him. On 22 May 1840, in Hamilton County, Ohio, Joseph married Josephine Henrietta Thorpe. Sometimes Josephine’s’ name appears as Fritten rather than Thorpe. Joseph and his wife Josephine are mentioned in an 1858 deed recording the sale of the estate of Joseph’s father. Joseph died on 29 November 1860 in Hamilton, Ohio. He died at age 40 and cemetery records show that he was “killed on the railroad”. He was buried in Hamilton, Ohio, but later reinterred at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Josephine was born in 1822 in Springfield, Ohio. After her husband's death she and her children moved to Indianapolis (Marion County), Indiana. Josephine died there on 15 May 1890. Her brother in law, William H. Conklin took care of her burial arrangements and she is buried with her husband at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
