RELIGION: Christian - Religious Society of Friends.

BIRTH: G.J. Binns gives 1785 as the date of birth in his genealogical chart. This is expanded in Appendix E of his document to 13 May 1785.

DEATH: G.J. Binns gives 1871 as date of death (gen. chart) and expands this in Appendix E to 10 March 1871. The place of death was Edenbreck [Lancashire Guardian, 8 April, 1911]. He died 10th of 3rd Month 1871 aged 85 years and was buried in Lancaster.

EDUCATION: Apprenticed to a farmer. Made valuable contributions to the breeding of sheep and cattle and the cultivation of corn.

OCCUPATION: Farmer 1809 to 1818 - He started to farm and carried out valuable experiments and bred special cattle. One of these, "Elvira", was very noted in its time. Land Surveyor 1822 - Appointed the surveyor for the Garstang District Authority. Lithographer 1824 - He published a map of Lancaster that is still very valuable, based upon his surveys of 1821. Agent 1830 - Became agent for the Salmesbury Estates and took an active part as a judge in many agricultural shows. Member of the Lancaster Literary, Scientific and Natural History Society ; became President of the Society in 1841. Assistant Commissioner with respect to the Poor in Ireland.

1851 - "Notes on the Agriculture of Lancashire with Suggestions for its Improvement", pub. Dobson and Son, Preston. 1861 - "Grasses" - a lecture to Lancaster Farmers, published as a pamphlet by Messrs. E. & J.L. Milner, now in the possession of Lancaster Library. 1865 - "A Collection of the Most Valuable Grasses, with Descriptions", a manuscript now in the Lancaster Public Library.

CONFLICT: Place of death is disputed. It was either West Place or Edenbreck (both in Lancaster).

MISCELLANEOUS_NOTES: For an expansion of the many activities of Jonathan Binns, see notes extracted from the Lancaster Guardian for 8 April, 1911 by Margaret Page [1990 ]. At least one letter of Jonathan's is addressed from his son's residence in Derbyshire [Clay Cross Hall] indicating that the latter had achieved success moderately early in life.
