John Ward was born March 15, 1783, in Prince George Parish, Montgomery County, Maryland, the third of six children born to John and Mary Ward. His early years were spent near home and family history notes that he was a member of a committee that assisted in the survey and layout of streets for the fledgling national capital, Washington, D. C. He migrated to Carter County, Tennessee, and was commissioned as captain in the Fifth Regiment of the Tennessee Militia on September 28, 1814. He married Jennie Doran, the fifth child of Alexander Doran and Elizabeth Lowery Doran. Through marriage he became related to several pioneer families, including the Dorans, Donnellys, and Keys. He was instrumental in planning the city of Taylorsville (Mountain City) at its inception. Ward owned three forges on or near the Laurel River in the area known as Ward's Forge, Tennessee (Laural Bloomery). He was associated with David Lewis Grace and sons in the production of pig iron. Some of the material produced at the forges went into the production of Tennessee long rifles. Ward had extensive land holdings in the county on which iron mines were located. John Ward and Jennie Doran Ward had seven children. After her death he was remarried to Delilah Hardin Waide on November 23, 1839. There were no children from this second marriage. Ward continued to be active in business matters during the 1850's and JCT court proceedings confirm several appearances for financial matters and for property transactions. He died on November 11, 1865. John Ward and his first wife, Jennie Doran Ward, are buried in the Wills Cemetery near Laurel Bloomery. His second wife, Delilah Hardin Ward, was buried in the Acre Field Cemetery next to his son Alex Ward.
