Facts and Events
The family migrated to Arkansas around 1863. John was a stagecoach driver on the Butterfield Overland Mail route, that went from Ft. Smith, Arkansas though Indian territory. While at a place called Caney near Atoka, Oklahoma, the Indians raided the stage coach and killed John.??? It is said that the indians burned the body. Listed in 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Marion Co., Tennessee,Scattering, page 443, 4 November 1850, dwelling/family 913. Tarbit, John, 44, Farmer, b. TN; Abt 1806 Margaret, 32, b. Arkansas. The 1860 Census shows a child, Serina Smith in the family. She was likely a daughter to Elizabeth from a prior marrage. The 1860 Census also show children; Walter Allen b. 1842 Damon E. b. 1846 Joseph Samuel b. 1849, d. 1933 Amos b. 1849 Jonathan Cain b. 1851 d. 1927 All the above children were born prior to the marrage of John and Elizabeth. Because they were not mentiioned in the 1850 census of John Torbit, it is assumed they were the children of Elizabeth from a prior marrage. Note; Not all records list the Amos named above. By the 1860 Census he was no longer with the family. He may have been a twin to Joseph who was born the same year. If so Amos may have died as a child. References
