Damon was born in 1847 in TN, the son of John and Margaret Torbet At age 16 he moved with his family to Arkansas, and in 1867 he married Sarah Batterfield . The marrage took place in Pope Co by Magistrate M.C. Morris. One account of Damon's life says the following; Damon and Mr. Hood were partners in a saw mill. They got into a quarel concerning the operations of the mill. One day Damon was sitting in frount of the mill playing with his brother Fred when someone shot and killed him. this happened near Havana Arkansas. It was reported in later years that Mr. Hood confessed that he did the killing. One of his sons put up a tombstone and spelled the name TORBETT. Another son took down this monument and erected one that spelled the name TORBITT. To this day the stone reads TORBITT. |
