Steuart, John - born 9/6/1761 in Augusta County (later Bath County), Virginia, where entered service 1781 in Virginia regiment; granted Pension 1833 in Bath County, Virginia; John W. Gloughlin & John Wade made affidavit there then; soldier's last Pension Payment in file 1841; surname also spelled Stewart; query letter in file states soldier married Hannah Hicklin & died in Bath County, Virginia F-S19474, R2282.

John Stuart, son of William and Margaret Stuart, was born September 6, 1761, on the Cowpasutre River in Augusta (now Highland) County, Virginia. He enlisted in the Revolutionary Army in January, 1781, served as a private in Capt. Thomas Hicklin's Company under Colonels Sampson Matthews and William Bowyer in the Virginia Troops. He was at the Siege of Yorktown where he was wounded on his hand by the cut of a sword, and was discharged after the surrender of Cornwallis. He was allotted pension on Certificate No. 23909, issued April 21, 1834, at which time he was living in Bath County. On May 31, 1787, he married Hannah Hicklin, a daughter of John Hicklin, a son of Thomas Hicklin, Sr. ... John Stuart died in 1850. His wife died in 1856.
