Savage's Dictionary, p. 4:30, mentions John of Marshfield, but says nothing about his origins or any event preceding his marriage in 1666.

Source:Cutter, William Richard. New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, p. 1:526, lists three probable brothers, Edward, William and Thomas Sawyer who migrated to Essex County, MA about 1642. Edward left a son John b. 1648 who probably was the John and Mary Sawyer of Rowley who had a daughter Mary in 1676. William had a son John b. Newbury 1645 m. Sarah Poore. Thomas had a son John b. 1661 who was not mentioned in his will of 1705, but according to another Cutter book Source:Genealogical and personal memoirs relating to the families of the state of Massachusetts, p. 77, he was the John Sawyer of Lancaster who m. Worcester 1686 Mary Bull. No luck here!

  2. Source:The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, p. 55:73, "Richard Warren of the Mayflower" by Mrs. Washington A. Roebling, says John Sawyer died 28 Apr 1711, but according to Source:Vital records of Marshfield, Massachusetts to the year 1850, p. 1:33, says it was "Rebecka the wife of John Sawyer decesed Aprill the 28 : 1711". The fact that she is labeled his wife, not his widow, possibly suggests that he survived her?
