He [John Savage, Sr.] was one of three Townsmen of Middletown in 1657, and held the military rank of Sergeant, as appears by " An Inventory of the Estate of Sargnt John Sauidg, deceased March 6, 1684-5," filed with Hartford Probate Records(IV:360), where his will may be found...

"Whence John Savage came, where and when he landed in America, are alike unknown to his descendants. ... it is probable that he came from England ..."

  4. His origin is unknown. A "family tradition" that he was from Cheshire might date back as far as this person, or might be the result of later genealogical research (or wishful thinking), and thus should be treated with caution.
