Research has not yet disclosed the antecedents of the elder John Robinson; the Reverend R. Isherwood, rector of the parish of Meppershall, wrote in 1909, "Our Registers for the Parish of Meppershall do not go back beyond 1658, there is consequently no record of John Robinson or his ancestors. I have just been to examine the site of the old "Smithy" there is one house standing, the other having burned down 40 years ago, opposite the house is an old barn and these are all that remains of the buildings; The mill is gone, the Smithy is gone and not a vestige remains."

   John Robinson was born probably about 1580, of unknown parents, and was buried at Meppershall, Bedfordshire, 4 November 1627. He may be the John Robinson baptized 12 May 1581 at Maulden, Bedfordshire, son “of one Robinson, a sojourner.” He married, probably about 1602, Katherine Eden, daughter of Henry and Mary (-----) Eden of Flitton-with-Silsoe, Bedfordshire. … John and Katherine Robinson’s first child was baptized at Flitton-with-Silsoe and the remaining children at Meppershall. First children were frequently baptized in the parish of the mother, but in any case it may be assumed that by 1605 the Robinsons were living at Meppershall. Aspinwall's Notarial Records (p.328), states that John Robinson, Sr., was a farrier, an archaic term for blacksmith. He left a will dated 1 November 1627.
