The John Mulherin, with whom we are concerned here, stated in his application for pension that he was b. 15 Jan. 1758 in Lancaster County, Pa., as recorded in his father's bible and copied on his own. [W9585, photostats from NARS]. It is indeed unfortunate that so far we have found no trace of either Bible; it would help trememdously in this research to know, with certainty, who fathered John. At first glance it appears that the father may well have been James, above, who was 27 when he enlisted 1759, the year after John's birth, in Pa. but it isn't that simple as we shall see.
