Services Held For J. Moses

Thursday, Nov. 12, 1942, John, third son of Katherine and Simon Moses, passed away at his home in Monona, ending his earthy pilgrimage after a brief illness.

Born on his father's farm 3 1/2 miles north of Watson Nov. 21, 1880, his young life was shadowed by the death of his father. John attended the old Figgie school until he was 15 years old, when it became necessary for him to help the older brothers and sisters to maintain the home.

Feb. 17, 1903, he was married to Anna E. Lestina by the Rev. M.J. Hogan. After their marriage, John and Anna took up their residence on the Louise Renziehausen farm, which they had rented. Two years later, they bought the Herman Krueger farm, where they made their home for 25 years. Here they reared their four children: Agnes, Mrs. Werner Johanningmeier of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Elmer Holly of Monona; Lawrence, on the home farm, and Leo of Monona.

In September 1930, John became manager of the Shell Service station on North Main street, which position he held until three weeks before his death. While living on the farm, he served as township trustee and for many years was director of the district school. For two years he served the town of Monona as mayor and was a member of the city council at the time of his death.

Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's church Nov. 16, with Father Luke Donlon officiating at the requiem mass. Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery. The Knights of Columbus, of which he was a member, and the city officials preceded the funeral cortege from the home to the church. P.H. Humphrey, John Seglar, John Jeremeier, Dr. W.F. Humphrey, Alfred Huniker, Joe Melcher, Fred Melcher and George Heins, Jr., acted as pall bearers.

Besides his wife, Anna, his children, Agnes, Irene, Lawrence and Leo, five grandchildren, Germaine Johanningmeier, Delores and Norbert Holly, Donald and Darwin Moses, his sisters, Mrs. Bert Ferguson, Mrs. Joe Lotza, Mrs. Joe Tayek of Monona, Mrs. Elizabeth McClure of Malcolm; his brothers, Simon and Jake of Monona and Joseph of Madison, Nebr., he leaves a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.

His father, mother, oldest brother, Albert, and his youngest brother, Thomas, preceded him in death. Joseph and his uncle, Thomas Ambroze, came from Madison, Nebr., to attend the funeral services.
