"John3 Hitchcock (Eliakim2, Matthias1) son of Eliakim and Sarah (Merrick) Hitchcock, born in East Haven, Conn., Nov. 1, 1683; married, Feb. 13, 1706-7, Elizabeth Jones of Springfield. She was daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Jones. … John bought land in Colchester, Conn., and settled there before his marriage. He was the collector of town rates in Colchester for the years 1713, 1714 and 1724. He must have returned to East Haven about 1735, where his daughter Hannah died [or, possibly, she was then living with relatives there], and then returned to Colchester, where he died May 22, 1754. Letters of administration were granted to Eliakim Hitchcock, June 18, 1754, upon the estate of Mr. John Hitchcock of Colchester, deceased; estate valued at £687-7-10. By his will he gave 'his widow, her third of the house, the north front room, south front chamber, part of the linter, with a privilege in ye cellar, her third in land and money.'"
