    "John2 Elwell (Robert1) was baptized in Salem on January 23, 1639/40. … He served in King Philip's war and his son John claimed a grant in Narragansett No. 3 (Amherst, N. H.) based on his service. He is said to have died a captive in the hands of the French and Indians in 1710. … Administration on the estate of John Elwell of Gloucester was granted to his only son, John Elwell, on January 19, 1712. The inventory was very small, the total being only £24:5:6. … The estate was insolvent and it was agreed that the widow should have her thirds but on her death what remained was to revert to the creditors."
