    "OCCUPATION: Fisherman. In 1635 Robert Elwell was on of a group of Dorchester men who were 'at the Eastward,' presumably fishing [MBCR 1:152]. In 1662 he frequently went to court over the matter of fish at his own stage [EQC 2:386-87, 401-2]. He was doing a substantial amount of fishing by 1663 [EQC 3:41-2, 81].
    CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admission to some Massachusetts Bay church implied by freemanship. On 19 February 1642/3, 'Robert Elwell' was admitted to Salem church, with later annotation 'dismissed' [SChR 11].
    FREEMAN: 13 May 1640 (third in a sequence of eight Salem men) [MBCR 1:377]."

    "Robert Elwell, whose surname is found in England almost exclusively in the county of Dorset, appears in New England in 1634, appropriately in the town of Dorchester. … By the summer of 1639 Robert Elwell had moved his family to Salem, living in that part of the town known as Marblehead, which was not formally separated from Salem until 1649 and of which Elwell was constable, taking the oath June 30, 1640. … He was elected selectman of Gloucester in 1649, was appointed by the General Court a 'commissioner to end small causes,' or local justice, in 1651, and was the town's constable in 1657.
