JOHN TETER ELROD was born either in Palatine region of Germany or Switzerland about 1684.

John married MARIA MAGADALENA LERCHENZEILER in Germany or Switzerland, before 1708.

John Teter Elrod had many spellings for his name. Johan for John. Teter was listed as Dider, Deter, Peter, Dieter, Dietrich and even Theodore. Elrod had many spellings: Elrod, Elrodt, Elrot, Elroth, Elrott, Elrad, Elradt, Elrat, Elrath, Elratt, Elrood, Elroodt, Elroot, Elroott, and of course all the above variations spelled Ell--i,e. Ellrod, etc.

In the "Early Eighteenth Century Palatine Emigration", by Walter Allen Knittle, published by the Genealogical Publishing Company, 1976, there is on page 265 listed the fifth party of palatine emigrants. They embarked July 3rd to July 10th and sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, on July 15, 1709. There is listed Johan Dider Elroot and his wife and one child. This is probably our John Teter Elrod and Maria Magdaline and Wilhelm.

This same group arrive in London, England on July 17, 1709. In the "New Immigration Passenger and Immigration List Index Accumulated Supplement 1982-1985, Volume1 A-E", there is listed Johan Dider Elroot and wife and one child arrived in New York in 1709. The next time I find any reference or document of John Teter Elrod he and his wife are listed with the Lerchenzeilers as taking the communion at the Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Lutheran Church in Wilmington, Delaware on July 16th, 1714. This may have been to tell her parents, the Lerchenzeilers, that they were expecting a child (born Oct. 29, 1714). I have 3 children - Jeremiah, Robert and Thomas of whom I have no dates of birth. One or two of them probably fit in the gap 1710-1714 and the other one or two between 1715-1718.

Johan Teter's wife Mary Magdaline probably died just shortly after the birth of Christopher on Jan. 29, 1721. He then married, probably to Sarah Wood Smith. He married SARAH WOOD SMITH, daughter of ROBERT and CATHERINE WOOD and widow of JOHN SMITH of Cecil County, Maryland.

Dr. Parker Elrod did extensive research on the Elrod Family. He determined that John Elrod and wife Maria M. were listed as communicants at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church from 1714-1719, but John appears alone in the 1720 communicant list.

The baptism of a child, George Arendt Elrod, one month old, is registered on March 4, 1722 with parents listed as John Teter and Sarah Elrod. It seems that Maria died in 1721 at the birth of her son Christopher and that George was the oldest child of the second marriage. No death record for Maria has been found.

The next baptism, of John Teter Elrod, Jr., is registered in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1733. The family must have moved between 1722 and 1733. There may have been children born between these years who birth and baptism records have not been found.

In several references Teter Elrod is apparently referred to as Peter Elrod, in his 2nd marriage to Sarah Wood Smith. Peter Elrod is listed 5 times in the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Quarterly Court Sessions abstracts 1729-1742, book 1, edited by Gary T. Hawbaker. This was during 1731-1732. Page 12, Aug.3, 1731 bonded by John Shwope and Peter Elrod for the appearance of John Shwope. Page 15, Jacob Snevely, Peter Elrod and Simeon King for the appearance and good behavior of said Snevely. Page 17 John Stump found guilty and fined 2 shillings and 6 pence.

Teter Elrod secured a warrant to survey 300 acres in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (now Wilmington, Delaware area) on January 19, 1733. See vol. 24, page 298 for Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania 1785. It is stated that no return of survey was made, and the record was vacated.

In Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Quarterly Court Sessions Abstracted 1729-1742, edited by Gary T. Hawbaker, page 12, August 3, 1731 John Shwope and Peter Elrod for the appearance of John Shwope. Page 13, May 2, 1732 John Snevely, Peter Elrod and Simeon King for the appearance and good behavior of said Snevely. Michael Bear and Peter Elrod for the appearance of said Bear. Page 14, Peter Elrod to appear and prosecute John Stump. John Stump assault and battery; upon Peter Elrod Constable of Leacock Township and ---"did violently and forceably rescue a certain brass kettle of value of 12 pence out of the hands of ye said constable". Page 15, Jacon Snevely, Peter Elrod and Simeon King for the appearance and good behavior of said Snevely. Page 17, John Stump found guilty and fined 2 shillings and 6 pence.

This Peter Elrod is undoubtedly our John Teter Elrod. He is referred to as Peter on his 2nd marriage and also on the marriage of one of his daughters to a Parks. Note the similarity between the sound and the spelling of PETER and TETER. Also note how similar these two names would appear in hand writing, especially with some of the fancy swirls in the writing of over 250 years ago.

John Teter died in 1745 in Monacacy County, North Carolina.
