Jno. Douglass's Will
In the Name of God Amen, I John Duglass of the County of Halifax being in my perfect senses to make this my Will and Testament as follows VIZ.
First I lend to my beloved wife during her widowhood my Land and Plantation whereon I now live together with all my Negroes and Personal Estate except such as shall hereafter be disposed of
Seconded. I give to my daughter Rebecca a Negroe girl named Sall to her and her heirs forever.
Also I give to my daughter Betty Fitzgerald my Negro Girl calle Patt to her and her Heirs forever.
Also I give to my daughter Rebecca two Cows and Calves, Bed and Furniture to her and her heirs forever
Also I give to my said Daughter Rebecca my Black mares, last years Colt being a Horse Colt to her and her Heirs forever.
Also it is my desire that all the rest of my Estate not mentioned both Real and Personal as also what is lent to my wife after her death or Widowhood be Equally divided between my five sons Thomas, James, Archey, Natty and John.
I appoint my friend __ Peters Martin and my Wife Mary Douglass Executor and Executrix to this my last will and Testament sealed with my Seal and dated this 13th day of March Anno Domini 1780.

At a Court held for Halifax County the 16th day of November 1780~
This last will and Testament of Jno. duglass deceased was Exhibited in Court by Mary Duglass the Executrix herein named and the same was provd. by the Oaths of two of the Subscribing witnesses hereto and ordered to be recorded, and on the motion of the said Executrix who made oath hereto according to Law Certificate is granted her for obtaining Probate hereof in due form she giving security whereupon she together with Henry Hopson and Talmon Harbour her securities enterd. into and acknowledged Bond for the same according to Law.

Court Order, Jun 1763 • Halifax County, VA, Plea Bk No. 4, p. 105. John Hann Skaits is ordered to pay John Douglass a wit. for him at suit of Henry Dixon and Anne, his wife 150 lbs of tobacco for 6 days' attendance.

    Note: the 7th Regiment was formed in February, March, April, and May of 1776 at Gloucester County Courthouse. Companies recruited men from Halifax, Albemarle, Botetourt, Gloucester, King William, Essex, Middlesex, Cumberland, King and Queen, Orange and Fincastle Counties. Field officers at Valley Forge were Colonel Alexander McClanachan, [1] Lt. Colonel Holt Richardson, and Major John Cropper. [2]

    John Douglass' name is listed on a Revolutionary War Pay Roll for August 1777 along with MANY other soldiers from Halifax County, Virginia, making it very likely it was this John Douglass that served in this Regiment. He is also listed on another Pay Roll for September 1777.
