Charles Dodson was born about 1649 based on a deposition in Richmond County VA court on 6 March 1699/1700 when he swore he was “aged fifty years or thereabouts”. Charles died in Richmond County about 1704/1705 with a will naming wife Anne and eight children. His wife Anne remarried to John Hill before 3 July 1706 when they petitioned the court for an appraisement of Charles’ estate. Appraisers were any three of John Rankin, William Smoote, John Mills or Richard White.
One of Charles' sons was John Dodson who inherited 200 acres of land in Richmond County and who married Elizabeth Goad – one of three Goad sisters who married Dodsons. Her sisters, Alice and Hannah, married nephews of John, sons of John’s brother Charles. John Dodson’s brothers and sisters, children of Charles Dodson born about 1649 and named in his will, were Charles Jr., Thomas, Bartholomew Richard, William, Lambeth , Ann and Elizabeth.
There are records that John and Elizabeth Goad Dodson left Richmond County VA before 1741. On 6 June 1737, they left 2 young sons, Charles, age 1 and Moses, age 8, in the care of the church wardens of North Farnham Parish in Richmond County . The reasons are unknown. By 1741, John was in West Augusta District when a daughter Elizabeth was baptized by the Reverend John Craig of the Donegal PA Presbytery. Rev. Craig ministered in the upper Shenandoah area and to the upper branches of the James and Roanoke rivers.
On 30 September 1756 John Dodson patented 400 acres in Augusta County – probably on Stoney Creek where he lived when he wrote his will in 1779. Stoney Creek feeds into the south fork of the Shenandoah River at Edinburg , VA.
On 11 November 1756, John Dodson patented 260 acres in Frederick County, VA adjoining Mary Allen on Mill Creek which enters the North Fork of the Shenandoah River at Mt. Jackson . He sold this land to Abraham Derst/Durst, for only 5 shillings sterling, perhaps to a relative - or because ofa disputed claim.
In 1779, John Dodson made a will in Shenandoah County , VA.
