John Berridge was born on 16th August 1795 and baptised later that month at Benefield in Northamptonshire. He was the son of Elizabeth Berridge, formerly Wright, and her husband John Berridge, a grazier.

On 17th June 1828, aged 32, John married Sarah Curtis, formerly Stanion at Benefield. She was a widow, with one surviving son from her first marriage.

John and Sarah went on to have three children baptised at Benefield between 1831 and 1836. Their children’s baptisms note that the family lived at Upper Benefield, and describe John as being both a labourer and a cottager.

Sarah died a month after the baptism of her youngest daughter, being buried at Benefield on 21st July 1836. She was 41 years old. Her baby daughter did not long outlive her, being buried just over six weeks later.

Seven months after Sarah’s death, John married again. His second wife was Mary Hibbins and they married on 28th February 1837 at Benefield. Mary died less than a year after their marriage, being buried at Benefield on 28th January 1838, aged 31.

John’s stepson, William Curtis, (Sarah’s son), died aged twenty in 1839.

The 1841 census finds John living with his two surviving children at Upper Benefield, working as an agricultural labourer.

John’s mother died in 1847.

The 1851 census finds John living with his son at Upper Benefield.

John died aged 56, being buried at Benefield on 17th March 1852. His father outlived him.

    1795 / John, Son of John Berridge & Eliz[abeth] his Wife was born August 16th & Bap[tise]d August 30th

This baptism has been linked to the John Berridge who married Sarah Curtis on the basis that it corresponds with the age and birthplace John gave in the 1851 census, and one of the witnesses to John's marriage was a Lydia Spencer, who can be shown to have been sister of the John baptised in 1795.
