    BENGE, John Born: about 1735 in Virginia. Other records suggest he may have been born as early as 1726. Known as “Old Trader, and operated a trading post on the Cumberland. He was of Scottish descent.

    Wurteh Second wife of John Benge and the sister of Old Tassel. Probably born in Toqua, in the Cherokee Overhills Probably met John Benge before 1761. She was a Cherokee woman.

    BENGE, Robert “Bob” First child of Wurteh and John Benge Born: about 1760-1762 in Toqua, in the Cherokee Overhills Duiing the Chickamauga-Cherokee war with the Americans. Bob Benge lived in Running Water Town. There he was closely associated with the Shawnees It is said he wits a friend of Chiksika, a Shawnee warrior of Running Water Town. Later, he relocated near Trenton, Georgia. He was murdered by Vincent Hobbs on 9 April 1794 near Powell Mountain in southwest Virginia. Stone Gap and Cumberland Gap are also listed as the location of his death. He was also known as “Captain Benge”and “Captain Bench.” He was noted for his red hair. He was a Cherokee man

    BENGE, Lucy Sixth child of Wurteh and John Benge Born 1776 Several sources indicate that Lucy was born in 1786, while others suggest her birth was much earlier. She married Major George Lowery about t796 She was on the “Trail of Tears in 1839. Lucy died on 10 October 1846 in Greenleaf, Cherokee Nation. She was a Cherokee woman.
