  16. Probate Judge John M. Beem Passes Away Sunday Night
"Death Follows Nearly Three Weeks Illness of Heart Trouble"
    Services Today
Last Rites Will Be Held This Afternoon At Church of Christ,
    Rev. C.E. Pickett Officiating

Hon. John M. Beem, judge of probate of Newaygo County since 1921, passed away at his home, 211 West Sheridan Street, Sunday evening about 10:30 o'clock. He had been confined to his bed for nearly three weeks as the result of a heart ailment. Judge Beem had a similar attack of heart trouble last summer and for a time his life was despaired of but he recovered his health to such an extent that he resumed the work of his office.
While on his way down town Oct. 2 he was seized by a heart attack and was taken home by friends. He lingered between life and death for several days and then showed so much improvement that he was taken down stairs last Saturday where he could be more easily cared for. Sunday he appeared to be in excellent spirits and gave every indication of recovery. His death Sunday night was a distinct shock to the community. He was 57 years of age. Judge Beem was born at Reeman, Mich, May 29, 1877, the son of Albert and Aurilla Beem. He lived on the farm where he was born until he moved to Fremont Nov, 7, 1925. He graduated from the Fremont high school in the class of 1896 and then took a business course at the Ferris Institute, Big Rapids. Later he attended the Michigan State College during two winters where he took a short course.

He was married to Miss Mable Balcom Feb. 24, 1904. She passed away during the winter of 1918. On March 2, 1922, he was united in marriage to Miss Grace Welink. When living in Sheridan township Judge Beem was clerk of the township for many years. While a resident of Reeman he was manager of the Reeman Creamery Company. He was appointed judge of probate by Governor Groekbeck on Nov. 8, 1921, to succeed Judge Miles Barton who died a week after his appointment. In 1922 he was chosen to fill the unexpired term and was elected to a full term in 1924, being re-elected in 1928 and 1932.
The Judge has been a member of the Church of Christ since boyhood and was always active in Christian work. He was a member of the church board as elder for many years. He was also a member of Pilgrim Lodge, No. 180, F & A, M...ewitt Clinton Consitory and Saladin Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine, Grand Rapids, Fremont Lodge I.O.O.E. and the Rebekahs, the Fremont Grange and the Chamber of Commerce. He had be a member of the board of education for several years.

Besides his widow, he is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Claude Hendrie, two sister, Mrs. P. A. Reed of Beulah and Mrs. Charles Miller of this city, and other relatives.
The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home, and 2:00 o'clock from the Church of Christ, Rev. Clyde E. Pickett, officiating. Interment will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery.
  17. MANY PRESENT AT FUNERAL SERVICE FOR JUDGE BEEM

Several hundred people attended the funeral services for the late Judge of Probate John M. Beem which were held at the Church of Christ last Thursday afternoon. Many were unable to find places in the church auditorium and sat in the social rooms of the church or remained outside during the service. The altar, in front of which the casket rested, was a great bank of floral offerings from friends and relatives and attested the affection in which the judge was held.
Rev. William Paulson, county clerk, read the scriptures and the prayer was offered by Rev. A.E. Gay of the Congregational church. Rev. R.A. Thibos of South Bend, Ind., a former pastor of the local church, paid a beautiful tribute to Mr. Beem. The sermond was delivered by the Rev. C.E. Pickett. Two vocal solos were rendered by Leon Conklin. The casket was borne to the grave by Harry Stroven, Lester Wilcox, Clifford Smith, Ray Brink, Pat McCowan and Lester Graves.
Among the people from out of town who attended the funeral were Rev. Thibos of South Bend, Mrs. John Morris of Chicago, C.H. Upton, Mrs. Albert Upton, Mrs. Almira Somers and Miss Lucille Somers of Muskegon; Sheriff and Mrs. Wm. C. Bird, Mr. and Mrs. Adelbert Branch, Mr. and Mrs. Nate Branch, Elbert M. Johnson, Miss Ora Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Streeter, all of White Cloud, Mrs. T.I. Fry of Lansing, Mrs. A.W. Meyers and Wm. Adamson, of Grand Rapids, Circuit Judge E.C. Pugsley and Frank Bagley of Hart.
