As to his age--The 1790 census lists Anthony as having four free white males 16 or older. This almost certainly includes John. I suspect his birth is closer to 1762.

William Bartee signed for the marriage of John Bartee and Sarah Pierce. William Bartee has a brother John, which is why I placed him in this family. They are the only Bartee family in the area at the time.


Petition (Feb., 1815) for dower and year's provisions by the widow Bedy Bartee, stating the deceased died in 1815, owning 200 acres on the north side of the Tosneat Swamp adjacent Asa Woodward, Benjamin Amason, and Joshua Tunnel. Dower allotted (Mar 23, 1815), consisting of 70 acres on Tosnot (sic) Swamp adjacent Willie Stanton and Asa Woodward. The deceased left the following children: (1) Sally, wife of William Phelps, (2) Delphia, wife of John Ellis, (3) Penny Bertie (sic), (4) Elvy Bertie (sic), (5) Charity Bertie (sic) and (6) Chacy Bertie (sic), the last four being minors with Willie Stanton their guardian.
