Gravener was probably born in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. According to 1781 Tax lists, he was in Newlin Twp., Chester Co. PA. He is also found on a Tax list for Cumberland Twp., Greene Co., PA, along with one Alutious Bailey and one Eli Bailey, Esquire. Alutious and Eli have not been found on the 1800 tax or census lists. Gravener was a Quaker. In a letter to a Mrs. Bruce W. Huling, 1030 West Broad Street, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, dated 01 September 1938, From: E. Virginia Walker, Assistant Librarian of Friends Historical Library Of Swarthmore College (Swarthmore, PA) was sent a copy of Gravener Bailey's Certificate of Removal from t he Kennett Monthly Meeting to Wilmington, Delaware, Monthly Meeting, also copies of the Mens Minute s of Wilmington, Delaware, Monthly Meeting in regards to him. No record of Birth was found in the Kennett Records. It would appear from this, that Gravener probably resided in Wilmington, Delaware sometime after 1781 and that his eldest son John was probably born there also. In the 1850 Census for Athens Twp., Crawford Co. P A. John Bailey told the Census Taker that he was born in what looked like "DC", but it is more likely that it was "DE", for Delaware. In the Copies Of Minutes of the Wilmington, Delaware Monthly Meeting dated 1787 was found the following concerning Gravener Bailey: "To Wilmington Monthly Meeting - Dear Friends, Gravener Baylay hath requested our certificate in order to be joined to your meeting, he being removed within the verge thereof; these may certify on his behalf that on enquiry, we don't find but his life and conversation is in good degree orderly, attended our Religious Meets at times, clear of marriage engagements known to us; and his outward affairs settled as far as appears. We recommend him to your care and over sight desiring his welfare every way, and remain your loving Friends. Signed in and on behalf of Kennet Monthly Meeting ye 14th of October 1784 by R. Lamborn Jr. Clk. (source: Kennett Monthly Meeting. Certificates of Removal, 1767-1875. Page 77.)T he Whiteclay Creek Preparative Meeting brings a complaint against Gravener Baily for committing Fornication, & accomplishing his marriage (with a woman not in membership with Friends) by the assistance of a Babtist Teacher. Joseph Chambers & Ephraim Yarnallare appointed to take an opportunity with him, if to be met with, & Report of their care to next meeting. Source: Wilmington Monthy Meeting Minutes for 12 September. Page 285. After the Wilmington Monthly Meeting date d 14 November 1787, Gravener was no longer considered a Quaker due to his marriage to a woman outside of their religion. There was no further mention of Gravener found in the Wilmington Minutes after 12 December 1787. Gravener next appears in Redstone Twp., Fayette Co. PA an d was i n Fallowfield Twp., Crawford Co. PA by 1804 when his name appears in the Assessor's Book No.1. He had 400 acres, 2o xen, 1 cow.
