[edit] Confusion with CousinSimeon Zelotus is sometimes confused for his younger cousin; for which he is the name sake, Simeon C. Bailey (1846-1929). Both were born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Both served in the American Civil War. However, Simeon Zelotus served only with a Pennsylvanian infantry; Company B, 18th Regiment. Simeon C. is believed to have served under a Pennsylvanian infantry for a time, before relocating and transferring his service for the remainder of the Civil War under Iowan infantry; Company H, 9th Regiment. Simeon Zelotus resided in Pennsylvania most of his life, with the exceptions of Holt, Iowa and Clymer, New York. Simeon C. resided in a number of locations post war-service; while migrating across the Midwest and Great Plains. Following his initial move to Iowa from Pennsylvania, he resided additionally within Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma before retracting to Iowa.
[edit] ObituaryThe following obituary was found in the "Spartansburg Sentinel" (Spartansburg, Crawford Co. PA) Issue No.# 49, dated Friday January 22, 1909. Page No.#1, Col. 4. Simeon Z. Bailey Simeon Z. Bailey died at his home in Vroman December 27, 1908, at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 16 days. He leaves to mourn his departure three children by his first wife, Mrs. Cyrus McCray, Mrs. Alton McCray and Mrs. Lester Heliker, all of Sparta township. A wife and two small boys Herman & Frank, one brother, J.S. Bailey of Flushing, Mich. and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Newton of Geneva, PA. and Mrs. Clarcie Shaffer, of Little Cooley, PA. Mr. Bailey was a veteran of the Civil War having enlisted in September 1862, and was honorably discharged September 23, 1864, by reason of a gunshot wound in the right shoulder that caused paralysis of the right arm. He served in Company B, 18th Regiment, P.V. Cavalry. Col. T.M. Bryan commanding. His regiment was attached to Kilpatrick's Brigade, of the army of the Potomac, and served either as a regiment or in detachments in the following engagements Hanover, PA. Gettysburg, Monterey, Emmettsburg, Boonsboro, Williamsport, Falling Waters, Brandy Station, Culpeper, Buckland Mills, Germania Ford, Mine Run, Orange Court House, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Yellow Tavern, Totopotomy, Cold Harbor, Haw's Shop, Old Church, White Oak Swamp Road, Seige Of Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Winchester, Charlestown, Leetown, Opequon (Sheridan's Ride), Fisher's Hill, Waynesboro, where it assisted in the capture of Early's army, Fall of Richmond, Appoxtomatox (Lee's Surrender), and a number of minor engagements and skirmishes. He was wounded at Hagerstown on the 6th of July by two saber cuts on the head; and at Groves Church on the 12th of April 1864, by a gunshot wound in the right shoulder. Mr. Bailey was born in Greenwood township this county, on the 11th of August 1835; was united in marriage to Sarah B. Frasier at Little Cooley, on the 5th of March 1853, to which union were born Mary Louisa (Deceased), Charles Edgar (Deceased), Rosa A. (Deceased), Alice J., Lucinda F., and Lillie S., This wife died on the 3rd of February, 1892. His second marriage was to Edith R. Mitchell, at Clymer, N.Y. July 4th 1893, to which union were born two children, Herman Deforest and Frank M., He was a member of John Fisher Post No. 337, G.A.R. Found and copied by Simeon's Great-Great- Grandson, Dennis R.
