John was a merchant in Ipswich and a colonel in the militia. He was Probate Judge from 1702 to 1739 in Essex Count, Justice of the General Sessions, and Court Common Pleas, and … 'for twenty years Judge of Probate for Essex Col. during all which time no appeal was ever made from his decisions.' He was a Counselor under the Charter of William and Mary and Colonel in the Essex Regiment."
