Joel Jeffers was born in Sand Lake, New York in or about 1821 of parents David and Dorcas (Tidd) Jeffers. His siblings were Lydia a sister, John D. R. Jeffers a brother, and Sarah a sister. They moved to Williamstown, Ma sometime before the children grew up. Joel met and married Electa A Martin and they lived in Clarksburg, Ma had 7 children. In late 1860 or early 1861 Joel joined the Army. He enlisted in the Mass Infantry Company A 18th Regiment. Sometime during 1863 Joel transferred to the New York Heavy Artillery Company B 16th Regiment. While serving with this unit he was killed in battle in Petersburg, Va on Sept 18, 1864. His body was later not identified. His widow Electa filed for and received his widows pension. The Annual Report of the State of New York Adjutant-General Report 1897 states this.

His daughter, Orritta was born in 1861 and it is believed that he never saw her. His son Lewis enlisted in 1863 and served for 3 months and was discharged for deafness. It is believed that Lewis lied about his age and joined so he could find his father and give him news of the family.
