Lewis was born in Clarksburg, Mass an area of low mountains and very dense woodlands, rivers, and lakes.

He joined the Army in 1863 it is believed in an attempt to find his father who was serving during the Civil War. It is unknown if he ever found him. Three months into his service he was discharged due to damaged hearing.

He met Phoebe Eddy and married her and they had one child, Cora. It is believed that Phoebe died in childbirth as she drops out of view about the time Cora was born. Phoebe was about 17. Lewis took care of the child as best he could but in the end gave the task of raising little Cora to his mother Electa Jeffers who had recently lost her husband to the Civil War. Electa raised Cora as her own daughter. When they told Cora the truth is unknown.

After some years on Jan 1, 1889 Lewis remarried to Ella Kiney and they had one child, Franklin Jeffers.

Lewis died at home after a prolonged illness.
