  4. Obituary
    Published in the Meyersdale Republican.

On March 30, 1922 was a long obituary for Joachim Christopher Martens - Joachim Christophr Martens whos funeral was held at the Wellersburg United Evangelical Church on Sunday morning died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Harry Petenbrink, on Mar 22nd, of a complication of diseases incident to advanced years, which were almost 89yrs. Mr. Martens had been confined to his bed for several months, during which time his suffering was intense, due to bladder trouble & other ailments & death came as a welcome release. His body was taken to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Peter Michaels, of Barrelsville, MD where it lay in state until Sunday morning when a large concourse of friends & relatives gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to one whom they had known & esteemed for so many years. Mr. Martens was born in Hanover, Germany on Jun 9th, 1833 & came to America in his youth. He was a veteran of the Civil War& a faithful & consistent member of the United Evangelical Church at Wellersburg. Four of his grandsons carried the floral offerings into the church & to the Cook Cemetery where he was laid to rest. He is survived by 9 children, 6 resulting from a union with Elizabeth Kneppenberg, namely: Mrs. Mary Sweitzer of Berlin, PA; Henry Martens of Wood Lawn, MD; Christopher and William of Youngstown, OH; John of Cumberland and Mrs. Peter Michaels of Barrelsville. In 1876 he wedded Ellen Jane Martin who died some years later. 3 Children survive from this union: Mrs. Anna B. Adamson of Minneapolis, MN; Mrs Sara Roberta Getty of Grantsville, MD; & Mrs Florence B. Winebrenner, Mt.Savage, MD. At his request he was laid to rest by the side of the mother of his last 3 children in the Cook Cemetery. He is also survived by 57 grandchildren & 48 greats; and a brother aged 92yrs, John H. Martens, of Somerset, PA, who was present at the funeral although in very feeble health. In 1893 he took for his 3rd wife Mary Ellinger, who died 1yr ago at Mt.Savage, MD. All his children except Mrs. Adamson were present at his funeral. He lived a life of simplicity, of usefulness, & good will to everyone. Having reached almost 4 score & 10yrs, he was ready to answer the summons, and during the last few hours he slept quietly while his soul crossed over where there is neither pain or death. NOTE: he actually had 4 wives, the first dying shortly after the marriage.
