From Nellie A GARD 5/15/73 (1319 Cisler Drive R6 Marietta OH 45750 <TO> Mr & Mrs Kenn STRYKER-RODDA in NJ): Please search for the parentage, with proof, of Jeremiah GARD of Morris Co. NJ.

My GARD ancesters came here from the Capon Valley area of Hampshire Co, VA (Now West Virginia) - Cornelius GARD b: 30 Nov 1749 near Morristown, NJ married in Frederick Co, VA 1 Oct 1774 to Mary HANCHER (HENSHAW). On 26 Mar 1892 Cornelius GARD and wife Mary and sons Timothy and David with David's bride and her father James HIETT and his family began the trip to the Ohio Valley. The The HIETT'S bought some improved land (320 acres) six miles below Marietta along the Ohio River on the Virginia side. The GARD's settled in Washington Co, OH.

J Percy CRAYON in his "ROCKAWAY RECORDS" says Jeremiah was the son of Joseph and Mary GARD of Stonington, CT who was son of John, son of Roger GARD. CRAYON on p-289: "Jeremiah, son of Joseph and wife Mary, born 1717, died at Morristown July 19, 1783, and wife Elizabeth is said to have had seven sons who served in the Revolution. Children: Ephriam Gard, married Mary Pierson, Capt. Daniel Gard, Gersham Gard married Phebe Huntington, Jeremiah married Elizabeth (Roff) Moore, Jacob Gard married Sarah Hathaway, Moses Gard married Sarah Lyon, Jedediah Gard, Joseph Gard married Kesia Lindsley, Phebe Gard married Caleb Fairchild, Sarah Gard married Samuel Parkhurst, Rebecca Gard married Nathan Hathaway, Hannah Gard, Minna Gard. CRAYON states that Mr. Anson A GARD, of New York City published the "Gard Genealogy" relating to this old Morris County, New Jersy Family.

DEATH CONFLICT: Guardian: Vol-8 No-1 May-98: Shows Jeremiah's birthdate as: July 26, 1783

The "LYONS MEMORIAL" says the same thing with NO DOCUMENTATION or references given.

Elsie Carnes DAVIS d. 1972 age 87 was a NJ GARD descendant did research in the NJ archives, but her findings are completely undocumented, and a VA record she gives is a definite error, proven by two VA wills. Elsie also said Joseph and Mary and sons Daniel, Jeremiah and William came to NJ but sons Elisha and Joseph remained in Connecticut. It is possible the birth of Jeremiah is recorded in another Groton Twp church, which I have not found.

From the files of Judge Spencer GARD of Iola, Kansas, his sister Rachel (GARD) CARTTIER sent a photocopied page from the "AMERICAN GENEALOGIST" without Volume, Date, or Author. The following appears on page 144 in the genealogy of the CULVER FAMILY: 15. David 3 CULVER (John 2, Edward 1) birth and date not found, married Mary GUARD, daughter of Joseph and Mary --- GUARD of Groton. David sold 19 May 1725 a wood lot that belonged to Joseph GARD late died of Groton, and on 26 Apr 1726 Mary Gard, Elisha Guard, William Guard, Elizabeth GUARD Guard and David and Mary CULLVER, all of Groton conveyed an acre which had been bought by Joseph GUARD dec'd [ibid 2:169.334] Apparently Joseph and his son William never left CT (Other info in original letter . . .)

Please search for the following information:

 1. Parentage and ancestry fo Jeremiah GARD (Documented).
 2. Marriage to Elizabeth JOHNSON, said to be proven by her fathers will,
    and her parentage and ancestry.
 3. True listing of Jeremiah's children. Jeremiah Jr in PA before the
    Revolution?
 4. Did John GARD, son of Jeremiah marry Elizabeth DUDLEY? Her parentage?
Was he ever in New York State before going to Virginia? He was in Wood
    County, VA in 1800.
 5. All land, church, probate and civil records for Jeremiah. Everything
    documented.

From Harriet STRYKER-RODDA 6/25/73 (Certified Genealogist 421 Summit Ave, South Orange, NJ <TO> Nellie A GARD): Jeremiah GARD could not have been born in or near Morristown as early as 1717, for the area in which he lived and died was not settled that early. If he was born there, it would have been in a very primitive, virgin forest home, where there were no churches or town facilities until he was quite a grown man. The first straggling settlers began moving into the area between 1707 and 1725, but I am rather inclined to believe that Jeremiah was born eleswhere.

Jeremiah died 19 Jul 1783 age 66 (CR and BM) (or July 26, 1783 - [Guardian Vol 8 #1 - HNC] He probably married 1st, someone whose name has not survived in the records. He married 2nd Elizabeth ROFF, widow of David MOORE, on 14 Nov 1762. She died 29 Nov 1776 age 60. Jeremiah married third on 2 Nov 1778, Mary BALL, born 23 Jan 1754, daughter of Joshua BALL (CR). There seems to have been one Jeremiah GARD only in the Morristown area, but I could be wrong about that. It appears to be a bit more than coincidental that Jeremiah Gard died of "inward Ulcers" and his second wife died of dysentery (BM). [Note HNC: I beleive these marriages are to his son, Jeremiah b. 1736/1744.

[Note from Nellie GARD: Does she mean unsanitary diet or just poor cooking? Jeremiah had a son also named Jeremiah. Will of ___ JOHNSON says daughter Elizabeth (JOHNSON) married Jeremiah GARD]

Using both the Combined Registeres (CR) and the Bill of Mortality (BM) the following pattern about the children appeared:

[Note from Nellie GARD: She is making some snap judgments here]

1. John who died in Marietta, Ohio (Family Record) [Nellie: Death Place

  Wrong]

2. Phebe who married 20 Dec 1763 Caleb FAIRCHILD. He was baptized 30 Oct

  1743 son of Matthew FAIRCHILD.

3. Rebecca who married 8 Jan 1767 Nathan Hathaway. 4. Cornelius born 30 Oct 1749 (Family Record). 5. Moses who married 15 Nov 1769 Sarah LYON. 6. Timothy. 7. (Captain) Daniel born about 1737, d. 7 Nov 1787 age 50 of apeplexy. He

married Charity ? who died 22 Sep 1801 age 52. They had a son Gershom who
  d. 25 Mar 1782 in the smallpox epidemic.

8. Alexander who married 11 Jul 1782 Hannah Keen, daughter of Captain James

and Elizabeth KEEN. Hannah was baptized 28 Apr 1765.

Since there are NO DEEDS in Morris County extant before 1784, it will probably be impossible to trace the first settling of Jeremiah through that source unless a deed has survived and been deposited with the Archives at Trenton, NJ. The Revolutionary War was highly destructive of records of this kind, and only a deep and very long search into later deeds could possibly produce any mention of the original ownership of land, and this is usually not successful.

Letter from Bradner PETERSEN, 795 Laguna Road, Pasadena, CA 91105 dated 7/30/91:

(J. Percy) Crayon's "ROCKAWAY RECORDS" shows Jeremiah GARD as the father of Gershom and his parents as Joseph and Mary -----. Bradner said his wife, a descendant of Gershom, had a former correspondent, Margie GARD GRAY of LaCenter, Washington who seems to have disappeared. [See Margie Jo GARD in this index] She cast doubts that Jeremiah born in 1717 would have been the father of Gershom born in 1736, although there are some indications that Gershom might have been born as late as 1738. She also thought Joseph's wife might have been Mary ELMER.

Another GARD descendant in FL expressed doubts that Gershom's ancestors had come from Connecticut.

From a letter by Nellie A GARD dated 25 Oct 1970:

Jeremiah GARD was the father of Cornelius as proven by the Morristown, New Jersey Church Records.

In 1965 two GARD brothers, Professor Robert GARD of Ohio and Judge Spencer GARD of Iowa, wrote a lengthy report entitled "THE EARLY BACKGROUND OF THE GARD FAMILY IN AMERICA." They refer to Jeremiah GARD of Morriston, NJ as the family patriarch and claim that he was descended from Roger GARDE, who was born about 1585 in Biddeford, Devonshire, England, and emigrated to Maine, where he served in 1644-5 as mayor of Old York.

Top of Form 1 Re: Jeremiah Gard - Elizabeth Johnson , 1780 Posted by: Patricia Jurkiewicz EMAIL: pjurkiewic@aol.com RR #3, Box #352A Johnston Road, New Wilmington, PA 16142 Date: July 18, 1999 at 12:49:14 In Reply to: Re: Jeremiah Gard - Elizabeth Johnson , 1780 by Sylvia Betts " of Sarah Gard, b. ca 1746, being the daughter of Jeremiah (Sr.) and Elizabeth Johnson Gard pretty well established? From what I could gather from this thread, it is Gershum's parentage that is more in question (?). Also, I have all of the Jeremiah children mentioned here, except I hadn't heard of Ephriam or Daniel. Is it also agreed that Jeremiah, b. 1717, was the son of Joseph and Mary ______ Gard of CT? Was there another Joseph before that?l clarifications
