Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA
Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:
- Page 478.--21st May, 1778. James Thompson and William Thompson. of Washington and Montgomery Counties, to Rev. James Waddell (Waddls), Spring Hill tract of which Thompson is seized in fee-tail and of which William Thompson is entitled to the use.

From Chalkley’s Augusta County Records:
- Vol. 1 - MARCH 20, 1782. - (370) Rev. James Waddle's negro wenches, Isabella and Maud, exempted from levy.
- Vol. 1 - MAY 21, 1782. - (380) William Wilson, Archibald Scott, Benj. Erwin and James Waddle, Presbyterian Ministers, are licenced to celebrate matrimony.
- Vol. 1 - MAY, 1786 (B). - Wm. Kyle vs. Call.--Writ, 19th September 1782. Susanna Call pleads that at the time of issuing the writ she was married and still is married to John Chapman, of Augusta County. Bond by Susanna Call is dated 14th October, 1778. She swears she was married, 8th January, 1781, by Rev. Mr. James Waddell. Kyle replies that on 19th September 1782, John Chapman was a British subject and prisoner and could not marry Susanna, nor could he be impleaded in this Court. At the time of the marriage, John was living in Augusta, with permission of the British officers, and liable to be recalled by them at any time. He was one of Borgain's troopers and had been a prisoner at the barracks in Aibemarle.
Information on Rev. James Waddell
From "Annals Of Augusta County, Virginia", by Joseph A. Waddell, pages 329-331:
- The Rev. James Waddell Born July 1739 either in county Down, Ireland or long passage across the atlantic. His Father was Thomas Waddell who it is believed, was the son of William Waddell- one of the prisoners captured at Bothwell Bridge in 1679. Thomas Waddell settled in Eastern Pennsylvania near the Delaware State Line. James Waddell, his youngest son, when 19 or 20 years old in 1758 or 1759, went horseback to South Carolina to teach. He met a man named Rev. Samuel Davies who talked him into staying in Virginia.
- He was licensed as a preacher by Hanover Presbytery in 1761. He settled in Lancaster county. In Lancaster, Mr. Waddell (James) married a daughter of Colonel Gordon. After the Revolutionary War he purchased and removed to the Springhill estate, in Augusta Co. Virginia. After the war he moved to the present town of Gordensville, and there he spent the last 20 years of his life. His Death Occurred In September 1805.
