Identity

Foster (1872)[4] appears to be the source for identifying James as the son of the Elias who died in 1687. While this could be true, there appears to be a generation missing, given the more than 60 years between their births.

Note the following Elias Tuckett's in the area at the time:

  • An Elias Tuckett of Bridford, Devon (2 miles from Christow) had children (mother not named) Elias in 1656, Mary in 1660 and Andrew in 1665.[5]
  • An Elias Tuckett of Crediton, Devon (12 miles from Christow) married to a Joane (at least from 1673-1676) had children Elias in 1673, Nicholas in 1676 and Simon in 1679.[5]

The Elias born in 1597 (if his age at death is accurate) could possibly be the former, but was unlikely to have been the latter. Alternately, there could have been a number of Elias Tuckett's in the area at the time, possibly a father, son and nephew.
