ALAMANCE COUNTY WILLS Wills to September Term 1858 Bk 1, pp 141, 142, D-2. WILL OF JAMES"SMOKY TOWN JIM" THOMPSON The following will and codicil were dictated to Samuel Turrentine by James Thompson, son of John Thompson and father of James U. Thompson. I, James Thompson of the County of Alamance and State of North Carolina, being of sound mind and memory, but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say- First That my Executor (hereinafter named) shall provide for my body a decent burial suited to the wishes of my friends and pay all my just debts with my funeral expenses out of the money that may first come into his hands as a part or parcel of my estate. Item First: I give and devise to my daughter Mary that parcel or tract of land lying on the south side of my home place known as the Box place, containing one hundred and ninety-two acres, as by survey. Item 2: I give and devise to my daughter Mary one negro girl Hariet about nine years old, also one negro boy Henry about eight years old children of Ann, also one negro girl named Hannah, also a child of Ann. Item 3: I give to my daughter Mary my Barouch and a horse worth one hundred dollars, also one Desk and Bookcase, two Beds and furniture, one Fallenleaf table, one cow, four sheep, Twenty dolloars worth of kitchen furniture, one set of chains. Item 4: I give and devise to my son Joseph the tract of land on which he now lives containing one hundred and seventy-four acres known as the Morrow place adjoining Margaret Jones, James Morrow and others. Item 5: I give to my son Joseph ninety acres of land on the east side of my home place, beginning at a hickery on Francis Ray's line and running with his line as far as the woodland extends and then with the line as run by Daniel Foust to Margaret Jones line. Provided that my son Joseph pays to me or to my estate Three hundred dollars. Item 6: I give to my son Joseph a negro man named Amos, about 27 years old. I value Amos at Nine hundred dollars. Item 7: The plantation i have given to my son Joseph in a former part of this my will known as the Morrow tract I value at Seven hundred & seventy-five dollars. Item 8: The plantation that I have given to my son James on which he now lives known as the River place I value at six hundred & fifty dollars. The negro man Sam, that I gave to my son James and the negro boy Willis I valued at One thousand & twenty-five dollars. The negro girl Lucinda that I gave to my daughter Jane wife of William Holmes I valued at eight hundred dollars. Lucindas second and third child given to my daughter Jane wife of William Holmes I valued at three hundred & fifty dollars, and the other property given to my daughter Jane at the time of her marriage & at sundry other times I have valued at one hundred dollars. Item 10: The negro girl Jula that I gave to my daughter Eliza wife of John Johnston I valued at eight hundred. Item 11: The other property that I gave to my daughter Eliza wife of John Johnston at the time of her marriage and at sundry other times I valued at one hundred dollars. Item 12: The negro girl Minervy that I gave to my daughter Cornelia wife of Sam'l Rogers I valued at eight hundred dollars and the other property that I gave to my daughter Cornelia at the time of her marriage I valued at one hundred dollars. Item 13: My will and desire is that my grandson George Sidney Thompson be prepared to enter college out of my estate, & that with the money I have expended on his father my son Edwin G. Thompson will make a fair and equitable portion according to the value of my estate. Item 14: I give and devise to my son William my mansion |
